Super 8 casting news

Information about JJ Abrams’ next film Super 8 – an homage to Spielberg’s Amblin films of the late 70s and early 80s – has been slow in coming, but several members of the cast have now been revealed.

On Friday, Vulture reported Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Elle Fanning (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button) were in. Earlier today, The Wrap added several more names: Ron Eldard (Sleepers), Noah Emmerich (Little Children), Gabriel Basso (The Big C) and newcomers Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills.

It’s an interesting group. I haven’t really seen Chandler recently (saw the film version of Friday Night Lights but haven’t been watching the series), but I enjoyed him on Early Edition a few years back.  He kind of has an everyman quality to him that I like.

As for Fanning, I look forward to seeing her. So far, I’ve only seen her in Benjamin Button (and if I remember right, her performance in that was actually dubbed by Cate Blanchett), but if she’s anything like her sister, she’s got some talent.

As I said, not much is known about Super 8, but from what I understand, the story goes that a bunch of kids are messing around filming their own movie and accidentally capture something (a monster?) on film. Going by that, it would make sense that Chandler, Emmerich, and Eldard are playing the kids’ fathers. They’re all exactly the same age, so it seems to fit, in a way.

Or, y’know, I could just be completely wrong. Hey, what’s a blog without a little idle speculation?
